'MONEY MAT' MAKES IT TO VICTORY LANE AT UTICA-ROME
VERNON, NY...Friday night was the opening points race of the 2026 season at Utica-Rome Speedway with a great field of cars on hand in the four divisions.
Jimmy Phelps outgunned Brandon Loucks for the lead in the 3 Bastards Brewing Modified feature with Willy Decker slotting into third, followed by Nicholas Root and Mat Williamson. The action was hot and heavy behind them with last week's winner Matt Janczuk mixing it up with Ronnie Davis III, but Janczuk's spin in turn one after contact with Davis III caused a chain reaction that collected Dave Marcuccilli and AJ Potrzebowski II. Both Janczuk and Marcuccilli were out as a result of crash damage. Talbot launched into the second spot on the restart, but Decker fought him hard for that position as Williamson nabbed fourth from Root. Talbot took the lead on lap 10 as Williamson closed in from third. Williamson took second from Phelps three laps later and set sail after Talbot, moving into the lead on lap 15. The leaders hit traffic in the second half of the race, and Phelps hooked on the bumper of AJ Miller on lap 19 as he and Talbot were trying to pass him, bringing out a caution. Larry Wight, who started 19th, made a late race charge from a lap 19 restart, motoring into third as Williamson rocketed away in front, cruising to the win. Wight caught Talbot on lap 27 and grabbed second. Talbot had trouble in turn one on lap 29, which brought out another caution, setting up a single lap run to the checkers. Williamson got the run he needed on the restart and held off Wight for the win with Decker and Root following. Brandon Walters snuck into the fifth spot on the final restart.
3 Bastards Brewing 358 Modified heats were won by Mat Williamson, Jimmy Phelps, and Payton Talbot.
Ed Lukas was your early leader in the Jackson's Auto Outlet/Taylor's Trailers Crate Sportsman feature, but Matt Guererri hounded him for several laps before taking the top spot on lap 9. Lukas had Tyler Corcoran and David Hackett battling for third behind him and Mike Fowler came into the mix as well. The first Wicked Tees caution came out on lap 11 as Josh Coonradt spun out of the sixth spot in turn four. Corcoran grabbed second on the restart and set sail after Guererri as Hackett, Lukas, and Fowler duked it out for third. Guererri was able to pull away from Corcoran, but his lead was extingushed by a lap 20 yellow for Blake Sarpriacone's spin. Guererri, Corcoran, and Fowler had a furious fight for the top three spots over the final few laps with Guererri hanging on for his second win of the season, with Corcoran holding off Fowler for second. Hackett and Riley Rogala completed the top five.
Jackson's Auto Outlet/Taylor's Trailers Crate Sportsman heats were won by Josh Coonradt, Matt Guererri, and Riley Rogala.
Slater Baker took off from the front row in the JB's Line Cleaning and Plumbing Pro Stock feature to open up a lead over Devon Camengea. Luke Horning and Ivan Joslin mixed it up for the fourth spot, but they touched going into turn one, which sent Horning spinning to bring out a caution on lap 6. Joslin mmade his way to second on the restart as last week's feature winner AJ Walters worked his way into a battle with Camengea for third. Camengea jumped back into second on a lap 11 restart as the top four battled hard. Camengea went on the charge as he fought with Baker for the lead while George Cushman got past Joslin and Walters to take third. A lap 18 yellow again bunched the field for a final dash to the checkers. Camengea drove away from Baker for the win, with Cushman third, followed by Walters and Tommy Lizotte.
JB's Line Cleaning & Plumbing Pro Stock heats were won by Shane Playford, Toby Cooper, and Ivan Joslin.
Justin Crisafulli jumped from the pole into the lead of the Quality Forestry Management Limited Sportsman feature, but he slid back a couple of spots and then slid off the track in turn three to bring out a caution on lap 3. Tim Halsey, who was leading, pulled off the track under the caution, which gave the lead to Preston Trautschold. Matt Bukovan slipped past Kaden Depasquale to get into the mix as Chuck Lowe and Mike Evans diced it out for fourth. Trautschold took off in the middle stages of the race to pull out a big lead over Bukovan. A multi car pileup in turn one brought out a red flag on lap 12. A caution on the restart brought the race to a conclusion, giving Trautschold his first win of the year. Bukovan, Lowe, Depasquale, and Evans rounded out the top five.
