Friday Night’s Utica-Rome Speedway Event Nixed by Rain After Qualifying

Written by Chris Moore

VERNON, NY – Rained out.

Friday night’s International Wire/Wilcox Construction event was cut short by Mother Nature halfway through the program.

With all qualifying but the Empire Super Sprint (ESS) B-Main in the books, a pop-up storm rolled directly over the speedway, nixing the remainder of the racing program.

One feature event was completed before the rain. Justin Pope and Wayne Russell Jr. raced their way to Victory Lane in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder 12-lap event.

Friday night’s program will pick up where it left off – with the ESS B-Main – on Friday, Sept. 8, except for the Next Generation Graphix Pro Stocks feature event.

With a $10,000-to-win Pro Stock event on the schedule at another venue, the 20-lap Pro Stock feature will be added to this Friday’s (Aug. 11) program.

The remainder of the program on September 8 will look like this:

  • Hot laps
  • ESS Sprint Car B-Main (10 laps)
  • ESS Sprint Car A-Main (25 laps)
  • 3 Bastards Brewing Modified Feature (30 laps)
  • Worthington Industries Crate 602 Sportsman Feature (25 laps)
  • Fastline Performance Limited Sportsman Feature (20 laps)

All wristbands from the Aug. 4 program will be good for the Sept. 8 show ONLY.

Racing continues now on Friday, Aug. 11 as Algonkin Motel and Slade Automotive and the Friendly Family of Dealerships present the ‘Dog Days of Summer Special.’ The 3 Bastards Brewing Modifieds go for 30-laps and a $3,000 top prize. The Next Generation Graphix Pro Stocks, as previously mentioned, will run double features on the Aug. 11 date as well. Also on the card are the Worthington Industries Crate 602 Sportsman, Fastline Performance Limited Sportsman, Fonda Fair Four Cylinders, plus the Senior Services Inc. All-Star Slingshots and Junior Slingshots on the inner oval.

The event – and all Utica-Rome 2023 races – will be broadcast live on FloRacing (www.floracing.tv) as part of the $150 annual subscription.
