Utica-Rome Speedway and Fonda Speedway
Join Forces in 2009, Form Six Event Series
VERNON, NY- Utica-Rome Speedway’s track owner Gene Cole and Ric Lucia, promoter of Fonda Speedway, have formed a lucrative six event series at the two popular speed plants. Lucia, who was looking to expand his popular Go Green NMX Thunder Series from 2008, came to U-R officials with a plan to give local drivers a chance to run some high dollar events with limited travel. With the New York State Thruway connecting the two tracks, which sit about an hour apart, it was a logical choice that the two tracks get together.
Utica-Rome Speedway will host two of the “Thunder Series” events with Fonda Speedway entertaining the series on four occasions. On Sunday June 28 and Sunday August 30, the famous Vernon half mile will hold their two events with each 50 laps in length and paying $5,000 to the winner. Fonda Speedway, affectionately known as the “Track of Champions”, will release their dates in the near future.
Rules will be set up so competitors from each track can travel to the other track under their home tracks rules, so everyone can compete in the exciting events.
In addition to these two events at U-R, there will be another $5,000 to win event at the “Action Track of the East” on Wednesday July 22 with the Night of Legends honoring Bill Wimble Night which will the feature the Race of Champion Dart Dirt Series for the Modifieds. Two $10,000 to win events, both 200 laps in length, are also scheduled. On Sunday May 10, it will be the second running of the Victoria< /1st:place> 200 while on Saturday September 12 is the date for the 20th edition of the New Yorker 200. Both 200 lap events will also pay $1,000 to start. If one driver were to sweep the five high paying events at U-R, they would collect over $35,000.
Action begins at speedway on Sunday April 19 with the 48th Season Opener with the Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. The mighty Small Block/Big Block Modifieds will start their pursuit of the $8,000 track championship under the new $2,000 to win purse structure with the support divisions also beginning their point chases in their respective divisions.
