COMPETITORS CONTINUE TO FILE ENTRIES FOR UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY’S VICTORIA 200
VERNON, NY- Entries for Utica-Rome Speedway’s Victoria 200, to be held on May 11, continue to trickle into the speedway office with seven more entrants adding their names to the list of drivers looking to win the $10,000 to win event. The Victoria 200 will be stop number two of the nine event Race of Champions Dart Dirt Big Block/Small Block Series and will pay $1,000 to start.
Vernon’s own Willy Decker submitted his entry this past week as he looks to continue his winning streak of RoC events at Utica-Rome Speedway. Decker won both events last season when the Andrew Harpell promoted series came into town. Decker, winner of the $8,000 358-Modified championship at the speedway in 2005 and 2006, hopes to start off the 2008 season with a win in this huge event,
Another regular in the in the Sunday night 358-Modified wars at Utica-Rome Speedway, Bobby Varin will be piloting the potent Jake Spraker Enterprises sponsored 1j in the lucrative Mothers Day event. In 2006, driving the Spraker mount, Varin swept both Race of Champions Dart Dirt Series events at the Vernon oval. Last season, Varin scored two victories in regular Sunday evening action.
Driver of the Schmidt Trucking numbered 30 machine, Gus Schmidt, has submitted his entry into what will be a talent laden field. A longtime veteran of Sunday night action at the Utica-Rome Speedway, Schmidt has six career wins at the fast half mile including his sole win last season.
A new regular in the Sunday night events at Utica-Rome Speedway is Jimmy Davis, who will move his Friday night operation to Sundays for the 2008 season. Davis, who is also a Fonda regular where he has several victories, had a decent showing in last season’s New Yorker 200 at Utica-Rome Speedway and looks to use that experience and improve on it.
Orange County Speedway regular Jerry Higbie will be his familiar number 97 in the pits for the May 11 event. Higbie has had competitive runs in the past visits at the speedway and to grab a win in this event would help Higbie’s title hopes in the RoC series, which he is a regular follower.
Jason Rood, a former Pro Stock competitor and current Sportsman campaigner, has decided to attempt to qualify for the Victoria 200 as the Sportsman have the weekend off. Qualifying for the $1,000 to start and to have a chance to compete for the $10,000 top prize would be a huge boost to Rood’s confidence after having a tough 2007 season.
Former Utica-Rome Speedway Sportsman competitor Kyle Lewis is the third driver to file his entry last week. Driving his sharp looking #09 Stadium International machine, Lewis would love to nab his first Modified win in this high profile event. Lewis has three Sportsman victories to his credit in his short career at Utica-Rome Speedway.
These entries join a list that already has Tony Steiner, Billy Decker, Pat Ward, and Larry Wight entered.
The Pro Stocks will also see action, competing for a $1,200 to win payday, during this big one day event. Gates will open at 11 a.m. with racing scheduled for 2 p.m.
The 47th season gets underway at Utica-Rome Speedway on April 20 with the first of five stop of the SUNY Canton Street Stock Series which will pay $1,000 to win for the Pure/Street Stocks. 25 show up points will be given towards the 2008 Utica-Rome Speedway Pure Stock championship for any competitor that attempts to qualify. The Sportsman and Pro Stocks will also be action, kicking off their chase for the championship. An open practice for the 358-Modifieds will also be held. Gates will open at 3 p.m. with racing getting underway at 5:30 p.m.
