LOOKING TO BE MOST EXCITING EVER
VERNON, NY- The 2010 edition of the Turning Stone Casino and Resort New Yorker 100 Weekend at Utica-Rome Speedway is quickly shaping up to be the most exciting in the event’s storied history. Due to a format change and a rainout in mid August, a Modified team could leave $15,000 richer for 150 laps of competition.
On Friday September 10, the Modifieds will compete in a rescheduled “Thunder on the Thruway” Series event that was originally scheduled for August 22. The event will be 50 laps in length for a $5,000 payday with the winner also getting a guaranteed starting spot for the New Yorker 100 which is worth $1,000. In addition to the Modifieds running their “Thunder” event, the Sportsman and Pro Stocks will also get in on action with their own Best of Four “Thunder” Series. A 30 lap $1,500 to win main event is on tap for the Sportsman while Pro Stocks will take to the track for 25 lap $1,000 contest. Also scheduled is a 20 lap event for the Pure Stocks, worth $500 to the winner. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday September 11, the 2010 season at Utica-Rome Speedway will come to a close in a big way with a huge Modified only event. The New Yorker 100, down from 200 laps last year will end the season off with the winner getting a huge $10,000 payday. Each qualifier will get a minimum of $1,000 for their efforts in qualifying. Also, in addition to a full slate of heats and consolation events, a last chance B Main will be run for a limited amount of non qualified cars where the winner will get a choice of taking a $1,200 payday or transferring into the $10,000 to win main event. Last year, Steve Paine won his first New Yorker with a late race pass to collect the big payday. Gates for the Saturday portion of the weekend will begin with the gates opening at Noon and racing starting at 4 p.m.
A rain date of Sunday September 12 has been set aside for the New Yorker 100 only with the same times as Saturday in effect. If Friday falls to weather, it will not be made up.
RONNIE JOHNSON FIRST OFFICIAL ENTRANT TO UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY’S
$10,000 TO WIN NEW YORKER 100
VERNON, NY- With the newly reformatted New Yorker Weekend at Utica-Rome Speedway just weeks away, the first Modified entry has been received for the big Saturday September 11 100 lap $10,000 to win finale. Even though the winner gets the lion’s share of the prize money, just qualifying for the New Yorker 100 will get a driver a minimum of $1,000 for starting.
Ronnie Johnson, the popular second generation driver from Duanesburg, filed his entry this past week as he looks to score the big payday. Currently third in the 2010 Utica-Rome Speedway Modified point standings and with an outside chance to claim the championship, taking the big win would be a perfect way to cap off a successful season at the Vernon oval.
Last season, Waterloo’s Steve Paine a last minute decision to attend the New Yorker and when the checkered flag flew, he was happy he made the decision as he was holding the $10,000 winner’s check. Brett Hearn, Bobby Varin, Ronnie Johnson, and Pat Ward rounded out the top five in the very competitive event.
The New Yorker Weekend kicks off in a big way on Friday September 10 with the Modifieds getting an early test and tune session as they will compete in a 50 lap $5,000 to win “Thunder on the Thruway” event. New Yorker rules, including sail panels, will be in effect for the event with the winner also getting a guaranteed starting spot for Saturday’s big 100 lapper.
Also in action will be the Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks who will also compete in extra distance and extra money affairs. The Sportsman will battle in a 30 lap $1,500 to win event while the Pro Stocks will compete for $1,000 to win for 25 laps. Both the Sportsman and Pro Stock main events will be part of the Best of Four Thunder Series in conjunction with Fonda Speedway. The Pure Stocks will take to the track for a 20 lap $500 to win payday. Gates for the Friday portion of the New Yorker Weekend will open at 4 p.m. with racing to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Then on Saturday September 11 it will be all Modifieds for the 21st running of the New Yorker 100. With $10,000 going the winner and $1,000 to start, many of the best Modified drivers in the region are expected in competition. Gates for the final racing action on 2010 at the Utica-Rome Speedway will open at Noon, with racing action beginning at 4 p.m.
UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES BIG CHANGE FOR 2010 VERSION OF NEW YORKER 200 WEEKEND, ENTRY FORMS NOW AVAILABLE
VERNON, NY- With just over a month left in the 2010 season at Utica-Rome Speedway, track officials and management are already beginning to prepare for the season ending New Yorker 200 Weekend. Scheduled for Friday September 10 and Saturday September 11, the weekend will feature the speedway’s four weekly divisions of Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks, culminating with the season ending Modified special that will pay a hefty sum of $10,000 to the winner and $1,000 to start.
One big change for the 2010 version of the New Yorker 200 Weekend will be the length of the Modified finale, which will be reduced from the traditional 200 lap grind down to 100 laps of heart pounding racing action. Even though the length of the feature event may have been reduced, the purse will still be the same as it has been since Gene Cole and his staff revived the event with $10,000 still going to victor. The Modified finale is scheduled for Saturday September 11 with a rain date of Sunday September 12.
While this change in the featured event has been reduced to 100 laps for the 2010 version of the New Yorker, fans and drivers should be reminded that this is not a permanent change. The 2011 edition may very well go back to the traditional 200 lap distance.
The New Yorker 200 Weekend will maintain its moniker by hosting 100 laps of feature action on Friday, and coupled with the Saturday’s planned 100 laps, the total laps of feature racing contested will be 200.
On Friday September 10, the Modifieds will compete in a “Thunder on the Thruway” $5,000 to win 50 lap special where the winner will not only collect the winner’s check, but they will also get a guaranteed starting spot for the following day’s 100 lap contest which is worth another $1,000. Also on the schedule are the Sportsman, who will battle for $1,500 payday, the Pro Stocks for another $1,000 to win contest, while the Pure Stocks will compete for a $500 check.
Gates will open at 4 p.m. for Friday’s action to kick off the huge weekend, with racing slated to start at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, gates will open at Noon with racing scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Saturday will feature a full program of heats, consolations, a B Main, plus the 100 lap A Main.
